Do you do periodic inspections over the internet as well?
Because I like to see it before I advise people how to connect 240v up with absolute certainty that I'm right.
Just in case "an amateur" has done something I haven't seen before, or the house was last re-wired in 1950, and all the insulation just dropped off when they touched it.
But to the op, whilst some people are sure what is wrong, please remember no one has seen it but you, and despite the best intentions, and if you are not sure, please get it checked.0 -
No unfortunately periodic inspections over the internet is not a service i offer at present but if you have a set of test leads long enough i can give it a go if you like.
However if you dont understand how by wiring a lamp in series by mixing up switch wires and mains can make a lamp in another room dim i suggest that you desist from posting advice.0 -
I do son, but unlike you, from here I'm not absolutely certain it's the only possible cause, without knowing all the facts. Why do you need leads?
You didn't even need to see this one, let alone meter it. But I give up now. If you want to keep offering your quick fixes, that's up to you. You're dangerous on a public forum.
The op can decide if they want to PM you.0 -
Well can i just thank everyone for their input and i now have light......:j
it was my fault (didnt have switch wire right!!!!and i know i said i was sure but was thrown by the fact it orignally did work with what i had and only on trying other lights did i realise the problem)..
matbe did help a great deal but i also understand what others said about seeing it before diagnosing the problem...But in the end I did ask for advice.....
i have now labelled switch wire and had everything checked over by retired electrician.....
Thanks again:T:beer: Am thinking of a new one:beer:0 -
Glad it's all sorted ok.
I've seen all sorts of different colours used as switch wires before now, red/red, red/black, black/black, and even the earth wire with red tape round it.0 -

I didnt need to see it to know that the switch wire was mixed up.
I have over 20 years experience in this job have you?
Also im pretty sure im not your "son"
Leave advice to those capable of giving it.0 -
Yes "sonny".
And without any offence to the op, unlike you, I also have the sense to know when not to tell people to mess with 240v, without all the facts. I'll leave the "advice" to those arrogant enough to give it unequivocally.
Keep it up though if you want to, I just hope you’re never wrong once, for their sake, not yours.
