Sealing a UPVC window?
Glee
I'm losing heat/money through my pvc windows and a friend of mine said about getting them re-sealed. But before I go and get an expensive tradesman, I had a look at the seals and they don't seem that difficult to replace but I want to make sure I'd be doing it right.
Windows although 15years old and out of warranty are in good condition and the draughts are coming from the seals and not from the surrounds.
Had a look about the net but can't find a site that deals with upvc everything seems to be for wooden windows??
Can anyone point me in the right direction..

found this link from another site, might help.0 -
Dont know if this is gonna be of any use to you glee, but my windows were letting in drafts too, I went to Wickes and bought 2 packs of this: http://www.wickes.co.uk/Excluders-Door/EPDM-E-Draught-Excluder-Seal/invt/210804, you stick to the edge of the window, and when you shut it the sponge compresses stoping the drafts. But as for the rubber gaskets Im sure most glazing firms will sell you them, cut them to size and use soapy water to push them in with.0

The bubble gaskets is exactly what I'm looking for.... didn't know the name....
All I have to do now is pull out part of the old one's and measure it to get the right size... Thanks evilgoose....
And the tip for putting them in with the soapy water is bang on....
Thanks Jason..p.s. I've been known as Glee long before that awful show appeared.....

How did you get on with the replacements? I'm looking into doing the same as a lot of our windows let in around the seals, particularly when its windy. I'd already found the site linked about by googling and was going to see if I could determine what I needed tonight.0

Quite often if windows are draughty between the opener and the frame it's due to worn hinges which don't pull the opener tight against the frame.
Might be worth checking so you don't waste time and money replacing seals.0 -
I had thought about that but couldn't figure out how to tell whether they were at fault. I'm guessing if I can push the window in at the top (this is where the draft is noticable on the 2 windows I've checked) then its probably the hinge? Any advice on figuring out the cause would be great.0

I had it done last year, £70 including labour and materials for 7 openings. Kept the old seals in the event, but no problems. A tight closing initially but OK now.
There are guys do this now, probably ex double glazing bods starting on the bottom rung.
This chap also identified and remedied a door locking fault, and also re-aligned a window. They do it every day so know the score.0 -
I'm going to have a good look and see if I can figure out the cause of the problem and if its the hinge then measure up for a replacement.
For the cost of them I'm tempted to just give one a shot and see how it goes.0 -
If you have any windows the same and one that isn't drafty, any chance you could swap some bits around to confirm it before you spend any money?0
-
Thats a good point. Seeing as its windy at the moment I'm going to head home and have a look and see if I can figure out which ones are drafty (probably all of them
