£100 charge for switch from British Gas!
Hello,
I'd like some advice please. A friend of mine is with British Gas and would like to switch supplier but has been told by British Gas that she faces a £100 fine if she switches. Surely this isn't legal? I've never heard of any gas/electicity supplier 'blackmailing' people into staying with them like this. Has this happened to anyone else or could there really be something in the 'small print' that would allow BG to do this? Anyone any ideas??
Cheers,
Louise

Yes, if she joined a tariff that has a leaving penalty then she can be asked to pay if she changes her mind and wants to leave early. It is not a fine, and it is not in print that is small. Typical cost varies between £50 and £100 for a dual fuel switch.0

The other thing to ask is why does she want to switch?
Most of the BG tariffs with leaving penalties are cheaper than anything available from other suppliers.
She should check that she is not moving to a more expensive tariff.0 -
Hi
I’d tell your friend to locate the terms and conditions of her tariff, this would have been sent when she signed up for this particular tariff and will state the termination fee if there definitely is one.
It’s worth getting a copy of the terms and conditions to make sure.“Official Company Representative
