Summer

Not strictly money saving but could do with some suggestions.
Due to the time I spend in lectures, writing assignments, commuting and running a household I don't do very much that is not study/housework related. I have had jobs prior to going to university so although I don't have a job at the moment I do have experience in the workplace.

However I know that in today's job market, achieving a good degree is not enough to get a good job at the end. Plus, never again will I have 3 months off to spend how I want. So, does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do?
Getting paid would be good but I do have some savings which I am willing to spend on an experience.

Thanks in advance for advice :)

  • I'm guessing volunteer work would be the best option? I'm sure you would be welcomed in that field whereas finding a summer job would be a lot harder.

Last summer I worked in a university research office doing admin work. I'd love to have another summer job this year, but to be honest I don't know where to look
  • Also work placements/tasters?

What subject degree are you doing and what sort of job will you be looking for when you graduate? Do you already have any experience in this area?
  • Summer camp in America is my suggestion. I did it last year and it was amazing! Cost about £400 to apply (which includes your flight) and you get paid about $850 for the duration (8-10weeks) but you don't actually spend much whilst your on camp (choc bar/can of pop/beer in the night off you get).

I'm doing a neuroscience degree and will be looking to do research when I graduate.
I'd love to get the opportunity to spent time in labs over the summer but it's been five years since my a-levels and I'm only a 1st yr UG so don't have enough knowledge to allow me to get a placement - at the moment I'd be more likely to be a hinderance than a help.

Some universities run undergraduate research schemes, which pay a small amount of money to students to work alongside a member of staff on a current research project. It would be worth approaching the member of academic staff in your department who is the careers officer to see if they have anything like this. If not, they may be able to suggest other placements that might be of interest - academic staff will have all kinds of contacts you can utilise and may even have dedicated placements with other organisations for their students.
As you know what you'd like to do when you graduate it's worth spending the vacations getting as much relevant work experience as possible. It shouldn't be too difficult to line up something if you're willing to work without payment.
