Absurd gas bill and i'm not home!!

HELLO EVERYONE, I REALLY HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME HERE.

MY GAS BILLS ARE HIGHER NOW I AM NOT LIVING AT HOME!

LAST YEAR I KEPT MY THERMOSTAT AT ABOUT 70 DEGREES ALMOST CONSTANTLY.

THIS YEAR I HAVE BEEN LIVING AT MY BOYFRIENDS AND JUST GOING HOME EVERY OTHER WEEKEND.
SINCE I WASN'T GOING TO BE HOME I DROPPED MY THERMOSTAT TO 60 DEGREES CONSTANT.
MY PAST 2 GAS BILLS SHOW I ACTUALLY USED MORE GAS WHILST AWAY THAN WHEN I LIVED THERE. I DON'T GET IT AS I COULD UNDERSTAND IF JUST THE PRICE WAS THE PROB, BUT MY BILL IS SHOWING I ACTUALLY CONSUMED MORE GAS THAN WHEN I LIVED THERE. ALMOST 20% MORE. I WANT TO SHUT IT OFF COMPLETELY BUT I CAN'T AS BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN I HAVE BEEN TOLD. I AM AT MY WITS END. THE ONLY THING THAT HAS CHANGED IS ME NOT BEING THERE.

WHY AM I CONSUMING MORE GAS? THE GAS COMPANY WAS OF NO HELP LAST MONTH. THEY JUST HAD ME RECHECK MY METER AND OF COURSE NOTHING WAS WRONG THERE, THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A BILLING MISTAKE, BUT I GUESS NOT.

PLEASE HELP BEFORE I BUILD AN IGLOO AND MOVE OUT!!!!

I APPRECIATE ANY HELP

THANKS:eek:

  • Were your readings estimated last year? If so, there will be an E next to them on your bills.

If they were vastly under-estimated, you will not have been billed enough last year. Once an actual reading was done this year it would make it look like you had used more this year.

I'm not sure what 'bad things' you may think will happen, but if you're worried about burst pipes, etc, then 40F would surely be sufficient? This winter has been much colder than the last - this could explain it, especially if your house is poorly insulated.

Please don't post in CAPS, it makes it much harder to read.

Keeping your heating on constant is expensive.

60 degrees Fahrenheit / 15 degrees Celsius is high to keep the temperature on constant especially as you are not there. .The weather is cold and the boiler will be going all the time

Try setting the heating to come on twice a day or if you must leave it on all the time lower the thermostat.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY, NO EVERYTHING IS A PROPER READING. I HAVE IT READ EVERYMONTH.
I JUST DON'T KNOW IF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE LOWER TEMP.

Gas price are 30% higher this year than last year.

I have my heating on constant at 10c at night and turn mine up to 15c during the day.

I have had to post about tariff increases myself, and therefor am no expert.
Bur regarding your situation. We have come off the back of two mild winters.
It could be that if say the temperature outside was 50 degrees last year but you was heating your house to 70. This year - especially the last month - you have been heating your house to 60 degrees but the temperature may have only been 30 outside.
It would follow that your CH system would have had to work harder this year and consume more gas.
    Just a thought.

Sorry about the caps thing, i had no clue.

I may try the 40 degrees, i am just worried that as i already went 10 degrees lower and my consumptions was higher that it may get higher still.

Hello, my consumption is more though i know the price went up, but i was looking at consumption. i shouldn't be using more gas if i am not there.

what is the conversion from 10c to f? thanks

Your heating is on all the time and you are not there.

The outside temperatures have been colder this year so your boiler will be coming on more and using more gas.

    10c is 50f and 15 is 60f.
