Clearly the reason was environmental. True money saving would be to tie a sack of bricks to the ankles and jump off a bridge.0

Yeah, but you wouldn't be able to jump as you'd already be dead, have to be thrown maybe. Or tipped rom the back of a tipper. LOL. Might not be nice for the kids finding bits on the beach though where they have been washed downstream....
I personally have never seen the point in paying all that money for a coffin to be stuck into a furnace or in the ground, seems a waste of money to me. Why not recycle them so they go 'through the doors' and the body can be taken out and burnt and the coffin is then ready for another use. Or if buried then papier mache could do the job just fine and it is biodegradable.0 -
Best one I saw was the then Duke of Devonshire comssioning his coffin to be made out of wood from a tree on the estate. The finished piece was a beautiful bit of craftsmanship, which he had put in his study and used as a cupboard until the day it should be needed. Very OS, I think!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

I don't know about papier mache, it would be just my luck it would be absolutely pouring when they got me out of the car!

The whicker ones look quite nice although I fancy yellow and yellow whicker? Maybe not. Shudder.
I have to say that part of me believes that they don't burn those fancy coffins anyway, or is that just me being cynical?

Don't think that you're alone in thinking that, fridayschild, am sure there was something in the newspapers donkeys ago about the practice!!!:D0 -
I'd go for that!
I'm not really bothered what happens to me when I'm dead, but I want a really cheap send off, so my dependants can keep more of my hard earned cash for themselves. Here I go again on my own....0 -

It doesn't really seem likely she was the 'first in the country', as coffins of papier-mache, cardboard, wicker, bamboo etc have been made for years.
Could just be they never sold any before, of course....0 -
I've asked my boyfriend to get me put in large cardboard box. He can make one by brown-taping some smaller ones together. It'll easily be sturdy enough.
I've told him that if he doesn't do this, I'm coming back to haunt him.
Anything else is complete waste of money. I'm opting for cremation anyway and couldn't care less about a coffin."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

I don't think it's the first.
I'm sure this must be old news.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
