Try the pass plus scheme which gives c 30% discount if 6 extra lessons covering night/motorway/bad weather driving are taken.

Available from memory via norwich union / tesco / direct line / dna insurance / quotelinedirect / churchill ( you may to telephone direct line / churchill / tesco )

the lessons cost £99.00 via aa driving school unless they have changed it very recently.

Isn't it cheaper just to buy driving lessons and later to buy insurance with a full license, not a provisional one?

Yes, exactly what I want him to do. He's getting the car soon and doesn't want to wait. No way do I want him to shell out £150 odd quid a month just for a couple hours practice a week. A 16yr old with good job and money to burn is a hard species to argue with.

Direct Line charged me the same as a learner as when I passed my test, said that they don't penalise learner drivers.

Worth trying any of the Direct Line clones, including Tesco and Egg, as prices occasionaly vary.

Try National farmers Union www.nfumutual.co.uk they do an excellent price for kids with a provisional license. They are worth a try. I have used them for my daughter and no one could better their price.

  • Take out insurance in your name, even though the car is in your sons name. It is legal, when I lost my company car a few years ago, I borrowed my brothers car and insured it for me. As long as you're honest, the insurance companies are ok with it.

Can't see the point of buying own car until passing the test. Better to add yourself to parents' or friends' insurance and borrow their car for (supervised) practice. If of course he has "money to burn" then it's up to him.
