Gas fire removal

We're moving house and have found a house we'd like to buy. However, it has a nasty gas fire of the 1960s type on the wall. Does anyone know how expensive this might be to remove? We have no idea of the state of the chimney or anything else. We may like to replace it with another modern gas fire but this is not definite. We'd just like it gone really!
