  • 3 bed semi gas heating on for seven hours per day,gas fire some of the other times and we use gas for cooking and kettle as well.
using about £70-80 in the month(actual usage on ebico prepay).
electricity is about £35-40 for the month on edf prepay.
we are not having to put this much in though because we have credit built up during the summer(have about £80 on the gas meter and £45 on electric although these are dropping a bit each week.

Did a bit of an experiment here over the last 2 weeks with our heating and electricity:

Week 1 - heating on between 6am and 8am and then 5pm to 8.30pm - hot water the same times, topped up with 1 hour boost a couple of times during the week but other times just put extra warm clothes on = Gas usage 49 units and electric was 113 units. (Thermostat on about 20 most of the time when on)

Week 2 (this week just gone) - heating on most of the time but thermostat set to about 18 (turned down to about 15 overnight for 3 nights) = Gas usage 42 units and electric was 95.

So, for us it works out better to have the heating on most of the time and the house kept at a more or less constant temperature flicking the thermostat up or down as required.

I always thought it was cheaper to keep the heating off !

I normally have mine on all day set at about 18. But that's only downs stairs, upstairs it's not on as I don't like the rad on in the bedroom, and the towel rail gets hot without us putting it on. :) I now appreciate it more as we have just gone three days without the boiler working so the whole house was cold as there were no pipes being heated under the flooring either. DH says as I am home all day then he would rather I was warm than cold, bless him. We also have the thermo valves which are a godsend..

2 hours in the morning from 6am-8am to give the house a bit of a lift, and then Wood burning stove in the evenings!

DD at £22 a month for gas at the moment, and from Nov-Feb, gas company owe me £20.

For info, I'm burning roughly £25 worth of wood a month.

Electric panel heaters in electric only one bed flat.

Bedroom on for one hour in the morning and one at night.

Hall and Kitchen completely turned off.

Lounge on for 3 hours per night, on for one hour then off for one hour...

Can't really give bill estimate as we have drastically changed our usage in the last month or so due to calling our provider for a bill update and it being nearly £150 more than we had budgeted - they told us the electric panel heaters were very unefficient hence the changes.

Has made a huge difference to us since someone moved in upstairs too.

Tis not exactly toastie though and in the lounge we have some nice throws on the backs of the settees which we use.

Also - might sound a bit weird, but we light a lot of tea lights and candles, really can feel the difference with them lit!! ;)

  • We live in Orkney, in a small, new-built 3 bed bungalow.

We have a condenser boiler, carpets, double glazing, good insulation.

I would say during this cold weather we have the radiators on for approximately 4 - 6 hours out of every 24 (never at night after 11pm though) and it feels lovely and warm. We usually have to turn the thermostat up to around 24 to get the heat on - but next door they have to keep turning theres down and their heating comes on when the thermostat is at around 10 degrees :rotfl: . So i don't take much notice of the thermostat here.

  • New GCH combi heating system (installed in May), 2 bed mid terrace (as good as end of terrace due to no one living next door :( ) poor insulation but new double glazing, thermostatic shower running direct off boiler, wash up pots 5 times a week

Im a uni student in the house all day Wednesdays and Fridays, there is always someone in at night apart from Friday.

Imeasure shows in 7 weeks £74.62 on gas and £31.80. Started using it around 15th December and it was cold back then, so thats not too bad

When im at home on my own I set the heating to 15/16c, and have about 3 or 4 thin layers on, lovely and warm, if my hands get cold I have a cup of tea ;) Try and make use of the uni library though, they keep it like a sauna in there :|
