Motability for new drivers?

  • Hi, thank you for all the advice. I considered it all and decided I will just have to fork out for a second hand car + the extortionate insurance. I (foolishly) believed that a motability car may also be used for personal commuting on a occasional basis - but I thought wrong :)
  • get an old heap and rag it to death, great fun :)

Sorry to interrupt this thread but the advice you have been giving on this thread is wrong. I am a motabilty trained motability specialist and you would be able to use the car for your own use. So long as the car is used for the occasional errands etc for your dad you are eligable. If you don't want to take my word for it contact motability directly on 0845 456 456. They will offer impartial advise on your eligabilty for the scheme. But trust me you are perfectly within your rights to use the car for these purposes. Furthermore you will get insurance covered as well as service costs, RAC, tyres, windscreens and have no depreciation risk.

You will only be able to get insurance on a car which is insurance group 8 or less but this still leaves a whole lot open. The standard excess is just £75.

I was only on a refresher course with motability last week and this issue was discussed and the comment was the car is covered if the driver even only occasionally buys a loaf of bread for the motability receipient, so you are definately covered.
