Mildew on clothes

Hi
Some time ago I folded several pairs of OH's jeans and put them on the floor of the wardrobe to make more hanging space and because the bar was beginning to bend with the weight!! (he won't let me throw them out in case he ever gets back into them again  :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: )
Anyway, I pulled them out the other day and found that some of them were showing signs of mildew. I slung them all in the washer with plenty of white vinegar, detergent etc and they've come out fine. However, all the other clothes in there (tho no more mildew fortunately) now smell musty. I've also re-hung everything on space-saving hangers so it all looks a bit less "stuffed" and higgledy-piggledy now.
The wardrobe is fitted (mfi type) against a west-facing wall.
Please can anyone tell me the best way to prevent this from happening ?again?
