Online Dating - payment renewal

Options
I signed up for Speeddater in September last year, as I wanted to go on an event and decided I would go on the site for one month and see if I liked it. I did not decided to renew after this month, but a few days ago checked the credit card statement from which I made the original payment, and now see that I have been paying every month since then!!

This amounts to £100. I have stopped the payments now (wasn't the easiest website for clarity) but the company refuse to refund me. They say I used the site on two occasions of 40 mins each during this time!!! I may have browsed once, which as a non paying guest member i could do anyway, but I did not as far as I am aware have full access to the site during these months. Capital One are pursuing it, but Speeddater's stance is one of absolute intransigence and hostility, which I find quite a shock.

I wondered if anyone else had had this experience. It could be that I was at fault but I had no idea that auto renewal on one credit card payment,, could mean you were setting up effectively a direct debit for a whole year, without knowing. My credit card statements are electronic and I must admit it took me a few months to check them and notice the payments unfortunately, which is not speeddaters fault, but they could take nicer approach and meet me half way, I can't really afford to add £100 to my card without knowing it!

Thanks for any advice - don't think I'll get the money back but Capital one are going to try.

PS forgot to mention - the second time I spent 40 mins on their site, as they argue, was when I went in to cancel the payment!!!

Most dating and similar sites work in that way (continuous renewal) and it will be in their terms and conditions somewhere. Unless you contact them to cancel, they will assume that you wish to renew and will continue debiting your card. Many people have been caught out in this way, you are not the first and certainly won't be the last.

Unfortuately I doubt you will get you money back as they will say that it is part of their T&C's and you should have read them before signing up.
