Easter and Toni, your parenting style is the same as the one I did use with my ex's kids and with my own when/if I am lucky enough to have them.

In addition, I give choices and consequences. "If you do this/do not do that, then this will happen/you won't be doing that." So then if they don't comply, I say, "I gave you the choice and you chose to do this/not do that so as a result...." The same with if I ground them, "I didn't ground you, you got yourself grounded." But if theyre grounded I don't ostracise them, I talk to them/watch a DVD with them or whatever indoors if I am there/free.

I also don't shout; it escalates situations and just scares the kid who then loses respect for you. Like in school with the shouty teacher (there was always one), the first few weeks you'd crap yourself, then it wouldbe "Oh, she's off on one again". Gets you nowhere. It is also easier for he kid to listen if you talk calmly in a lowered tone.

I do not smack as a rule only in the following case. If the kid does something really dangerous, eg my ex stepDD used to run into the road to collect conkers, despite me begging her not to. I scooped her up, told her off, one smack on the hand, then explained why and gave her a cuddle.
