Gas company has overcharged me for the last 10 years

I have just discovered that the gas company thought I was giving gas readings in cubic feet and have thus multiplied the readings I've given by 2.83 to get the total in cubic metres. However, I have always had a metric metre in my flat so they should've taken the value as read. I am just wondering about the legal implications in getting a refund dating back to 1999 when I first registered for gas. Does the 6 year rule apply even when I have all the bills from that date? Just wondering if I should get a solicitor... the refund owing is quite considerable.

The first thing I would is to contact the supplier to see what they say before seeking legal advice. Most suppliers dont want bad publicity. Rather than getting your money back you may want to suggest that the give you the gas you have paid for. This will mean you will get gas for several years for nothing at the higher (todays) price.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

This is good advice, the majority of companies will do the right thing when information is brought to their attention. The thing with seeking legal advice is if you do it before you give the energy company time to sort it, you get no where.
Also follow the companies complaints procedure to the letter, then if you do have to go down legal channels you have a very strong case.0 -
When did they first bring out the metric meters?0

Have they not in 10 years come out and read the meter? (I find that most odd if it is the case)
Have you always had estimated bills?
Like others have said ring your supplier, and ask them to come out and read the meter, then to tell you how much you have in credit (if that is the case) then sort out what you are going to do about it.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100/100miles

When you call, make sure you have the serial number to hand (near a barcode on the meter).
If you phone the person you speak to will probably not be able to fix it themselves (especially if it goes back to another computer system), but they will arrange to get it done.
They'll need to get all the old bills cancelled and create new ones which will probably leave you in credit -0
