Rent help?

Hey,

I'm a student studying at fulltime university. Currently renting a place with my girlfriend.
To clarify a few things:

1)Girlfriend is going to be a student this September, however currently is not a student.
2)Girlfriend recently was made redundant, at a bad time.

I'm currently stuck as to what benefits we'd be entitled to get living together. I don't really wish for us to claim them however we're basically being forced to atm. I currently work part time 12 hours a week as well as uni. And I cannot afford the whole rent.

And as a student I already know that I can't really get anything benefits wise, not that i'd want to anyway.

So basically, can anyone out there help meee? Even finding a job around the Stafford area for the lady would be great lol.

Many thanks,

Tom

I'm assuming you're already getting your student reduction on council tax? When you are both full time students you won't pay any council tax.
Apart from that, I'm not sure about any other benefits. I was a full time student 2005-2007 and paid my full rent (£550 per month) and everything else in full except I didn't pay CT. I lived on my grant and my loan and savings and what I could earn from part time jobs.

If it's just you two in the house and you are both full time students then you should be exempt from coucil tax, but you need letters from the College/Uni stating this.

As far as any other benefits as far as I know thats it...BUT I would advise you to make an appointment with your University welfare officer. Student financing seems to change almost yearly so please don't take my word as gospel.

University Welfare officers usually have all the most up to date information and can sometimes help with emergency loans or grants, albeit small ones.

From my own experience I would advise you to make the appointment first thing on Monday, you need to get all the facts before you can make plans.

    Hope this has helped.

Sorry I just saw if she doesn't start college till September then you will only get 25% CT discount as with only one student they will count your household as having single occupancy. Is she signing on? And also...you being a couple may make a difference to any Housing Assistance..as opposed to if you were 'flatmates'
