Renewing insurance with Churchill

I have just received my renewal notice from my home insurance from Churchill for £480. Thinking this was a bit steep, I went to one of the comparison sites and asked for qoutes using the same details. Churchill came up for £245!!!. So I phoned them and was told to save my quote and then phone another number and to select to cancel my policy in the automated phone system. I was put through to an advisor who checked the internet quote against their quote, agreed they were the same, and then agreed to a price of £245 for the renewal, which I of course accepted, saving almost 50%

My daughter's boyfriend recently had a similar expeience with his car insurance. When he got his renewal notice, he found that he could make a significant saving by agreeing to a £100 voluntary excess. He then rang Churchill to get a requote with the voluntary excess which was about £100 more than the internet quote. When he pointed this out, they immediately agreed to reduce the price to the internet price.

To me this stinks of sharp practice. I would strongly advise anyone getting a renewal from Churchill to check the price on the internet before agreeing to renew.
