Cancel SKY+ & SK+HD

PLEASE HELP!
I have been with sky a number of years and had sky+ in my lounge then on21st October 08 i decided to upgrade to sky+ HD at a cost of £79 for the box and i think its £9.75 or £9.50 extra on my subscription for HD i also had my existing sky+ box put into the bedroom so that i had multiroom at a further cost of £9.75 or £9.50 per month this box was mine and i was not in a 12 month contract with sky on this sky+ box or subscription .i also had sky talk and broadband again to which i have had longer than 12 months and was not tied into a contract.
After just one month of the HD box being fitted it switched off now being a long time customer i have been through the rutine of switch off your box and let it reset in the past on the sky+ box, well i thought no need to call sky switch it of let it reset, well did that and all was fine again up until Christmas when the HD box switched off again so same routine switch off reset and again all was well until Feb 5th 09 then it went crazy it just kept switching itself off and did it about twenty time that day so i called SKY and it all went wrong.

When i eventually got through i spoke to a lovely Scottish lady who arranged for an engineer to come and replace the HD box free of charge as it was only a few months old (yay new box and i only have to wait a couple of days) well about an hour later i recalled sky just to make sure i was gonna get a new box and also the same as i had purchased from them mine was the Samsung and when it didn't keep switching off by itself the picture quality was brilliant and i was very happy with it. Well when i got through this time i got a really arragunt man who was rude and very unhelpful he said no you will not get a new box it will be a reconditioned box and he could not guarantee it will be Samsung after explaining to him that i did not wish to have a reconditioned box and i wished to have the same brand Samsung he just kept repeating "no" it will be a reconditioned box and i cant guarantee which make it will be i explained further that i did not wish to have a recon box as my was only a 3 months old and seemed to have had this issue a month after it was installed,(His reply was) your box is over 90 days old and we only replace faulty boxes with new in the first 90days and that i will not get a new box end of and nor would it likely be a Samsung so i said im canceling sky and hear my big problem lays.

Sky have said i can not cancel my sky as it is within 12 months contract however i explained i have been with you for years but reply was when you upgraded to HD you took out a new contract and you can not cancel.
I thought about this for a second as my blood started to boil i said well i will cancel my sky talk and my broad band and my other sky+ box then and when the HD box contract ends i will then cancel that, he got even more arragunt then and said ok we can cancel your broadband and you can cancel your sky talk but we can not cancel sky tv either box but i explained ok yes the HD maybe not but surely i can cancel my other Sky+ box which i had subscribed to for years but he replied no with an under lying satisfaction in his tone and when i asked why he said when you upgraded to Sky HD and moved your other box to multi room in October 08 you took out a new contract so yes sky talk and broadband no probs canceled but you will have to keep subscription to HD and your other Sky+ box which was now multi room until your contract ends end of.

Today Sat 7th Feb 09 just as the horrible man at sky had said the engineer turned up and installed a reconditioned Amstrad HD box exactly what i did not want i have now been watching it for a couple of hours and i am not happy the picture quality is poor compared to my Samsung and it is pretty shoddily built too and also reconditioned well where do i stand?
Sky Talk Canceled
Sky Broadband Canceled
Now, i realize i can not cancel Sky HD
But is there anyway of Canceling my other box the one i have had for years?
PS when i did upgrade to HD and have multi room in the bed room they did not give me a new Sky+ box they used my existing Sky+ box which belongs to me should i have had a new one?

SKY DON'T JOIN cuz if you are a new customer they treat you well but if you are a long term and good reliable customer they treat you like (Bleep!):mad::mad:

Sky bought Amstrad off Siralan some time ago so I guess there will be more of them around.
I sugest you post on https://www.skyuser.co.uk as Sky employees often post there and could offer you some advise.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Sky do not have to supply you with a specific brand of box. Its upto them what branded equipment they supply.

When your contract is up just cancel it.

When I got Sky+ I got a reconditioned Pace box. Its worked flawlessly with heavy use for 2 years and still going strong and looks brand new. Just because its reconditioned doesn't mean there is a problem with it.

the age old, i don't want an amstrad ;)

ok, you theoretically still have 9 months of a guarantee left, so next week all you do, is call back up, and tell sky you have a problem with the box crashing or failed recordings..

don't bother mentioning what box you want, or anything, and then you'll get an engineer to swap the box out yet again.

there are some engineers out there that don't use refurb boxes, so you might get lucky and get one of them...

keep repeating until you have the brand you want. i did with my sky + and eventually got a great pace box, now i have a samsung +HD box.

from my point of view, sky have done nothing wrong supplying you with a recon box, and at least you can still watch tv, virtually uninterrupted.
Your reaction to something small like the brand or condition (i mean, is this recon box damaged, or do you really just not like that it is a recon?) is IMO rather over the top, and slightly childish.
You signed up to a new 12 month contract when you took out HD/Multiroom, so you have til october to then cancel, and then you can enjoy no HD channels elsewhere ;)

What the Sky operators told you was exactly in line with their standard policy.
Nobody was lying, winding you up, or being deliberately obtuse. It's just the policy. If you want to complain, read this: http://sam-radford.me.uk/how_to_complain.htm

But I agree with markymoo. If you call them out enough times during the warranty period, you may eventually end up with a good one. See http://sam-radford.me.uk/makeiteasy.htm

You are right to a certain extent but its not so much as its an Amstrad although as i said its picture quality is not as good as the samsung i had, its more to do with the way i was spoken to by customer support and also the fact that i paid for a new box in October and it was not working totally right a month after install and the fact that now i am only a couple of weeks over 90 day's as sky say i think shows no loyalty and not great customer relations to not install a new HD box weather it be Amstrad Samsung Pace OR the really rubbish Tompson. My main gripe is the way i was spoken to and i really do not believe i should except a second hand box.

If my HD box was 6, 7, or 8 months old and had only just started going wrong then yes a Reconditioned box of what ever brand would have done but as this wasn't the case i think a new box was in order.

PS Here's a question for you then you buy a NEW Samsung HDTV 42" from where ever its got great picture quality and good quality build but within a month it plays up once then a month later it plays up once more but within minutes its fine again and you go on another month passes but then it just gives up an wont work remember you have 12 months warranty same as me at sky and you call to get it repaired or replaced and they don't repair it they replace what they are gonna give you is a HD tv yes flatscreen yes and 42" yes but hang on there is something different this one is a BUSH and its a RECONDITIONED ONE would you except it i certainly wouldn't???????

As to your other advice i am gonna do that keep calling them out untill i get a new Samsung or Pace Box and i will do that every week for the next nine months or untill i get one of those Boxes and a new one at that if i do not get a new Samsung or new Pace its certainly gonna annoy sky which could be fun.

    Thanx for advice

I agree - u may eventually get a new box. However, for us the sheer inconvenience of 10 + (genuine) call outs was an absolute nightmare. In the end we got a new box and had no probs (touch wood!).

I had Their box for years after i fell out with them i went straight to freeveiw so as you have cancelled some of their services i would wait for contract to end and switch.

I have never looked back, watch out for freeveiw And freeveiw plus which does series link, not quite as easy to navigate but i'm saving £40 a month so i can live with that in fact i now find it easy.

Well, I kinda disagree with regards to the Thomson boxes, I have a HD one downstairs that is Thomson, and mine is a Samsung. Yes, plugged into different tv's and my tv is bigger, so HD looks even better than the downstairs one, but it's debatable.

Now, with the tv, this is what would happen. Someone would collect it, leaving you with nothing, it'd get repaired, and then delivered back to you. This would take at least a week, so you'd basically have nothing to watch at all!

If sky did anything like that, you'd be in uproar, so they at least have sent someone around, and given you near interrupted tv viewing.

I like sky, because of the selection of channels etc, and by all mean they are not perfect in anyway, and I've had to complain a number of times. I never seem to get anywhere with normal CS, but just send an email to the head of sky (jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com) and this goes through to the head of Customer Service. You get a response within a few days, and each time being successful.

First complaint was about the first botched HD install, and i got a few months free. (paid £299 for box!), and the second was about my HD install, because I already had a HD box, i wasn't allowed one half price. My point was that I hadn't had a discounted HD box at all in any way, and I should still be entitled. Sky said, 7 years ago, i had a discounted Sky + box. I complained, and got £75 credit back on my subscription one month, which again was a result.

Hope that gives you a few more hints, maybe try one more call out and see what you get!!! Luckily, i know a sky installer, so i got to choose what box I got when I got HD installed, and got it 2 weeks earlier than the date sky gave me!!! :D
  • OK have just emailed jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com lets see how that goes but i reserved the right to call sky out every week for the next 9 months surely they will get so fed up with that that they will invent a box just for me.:j
