Eating Well V's Eating Cheaply??

  • I dont see why I should post and explain why I am having Egg & Chips tonight and Beans On Toast tomorrow:confused:

It's nobody's business but yours - I sometimes have beans on toast on my menu plan, as the children have been out for lunch with friends and DH is away - I don't see that the menuplan thread is the place for posting my families itineraries, so that people can more easily judge my nutritional standards :p

As a little practical suggestion - perhaps people who list their menuplans on that thread in future could list EVERYTHING they eat - including fruit/veg, snacks between meals, etc - as otherwise the "true picture" is missing.
Ooh it'll be just like Weight Watchers -what fun:rolleyes:

I thought the meal plan thread was to give people people some ideas and to help those who post them stick to them. Some people hate thinking up 7 meals a week.

I don't see what's wrong with egg and chips anyway - in our house that means fresh, local eggs, poached and served with homemade baked chips with the skins on peas. Thats 'high quality' protein, carbs and veg in my book!

I agree you can't tell everything from a meal plan. Nor can you criticise anyone's choices when they aren't really choices at all. I often have no cash a the end of the month but I'm fortunate to have a freezer and store cupboard I can afford to fill at the start of it - I realise other's aren't so lucky.

Perhaps the OP could remember the adage about walking a mile in someone's shoes, from what I can tell people on here a doing their very best in hard times. At the end of the day if its a choice between 10p noodles and nothing then 10p noodles wins doesn't it.
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

  • You know what.
    I would'nt worry about other people's opinions.
    Any of you.
Two questions. Are you healthy and do you enjoy what you eat?.
If you can say you are and you do then that's fine.
I never worry about other people's opinions.
I've also been around long enough to see medical advice on almost everything constantly contradict itself, so take no notice anymore.
    I'm incredibly healthy too.
Life's too short to worry about such basic things and food should be enjoyable not something to constantly worry about.
After all have any of us developed scurvy or died of malnutrition due to your critisised mealplans.Of course they have'nt.

I'll be honest, its not what she said its the way she's said it. If I came into your house, went through your fridge and decried all your food as fit for slop, because its not balanced.

Edit: Actually having went and had a look at her blog - I see she's eating high protein mostly in the form of Whey/Protein shakes (following Atkins I think from the look of it) which would account for the cheap high grams of protein. And no I'm not criticising her diet choice, however had she explained this in the initial posts I think people might have been a bit more understanding of how she's managing to rack up large amounts of "pure protein" on such a tight budget. Note not bashing but imagine how much differently the thread flow could have gone if there was a bit more open communication?

I can't find Leiela's blog - is there a link to it? I still would really appreciate a breakdown on here of Leiela's daily meal plan, including protein count. It genuinely would help my budgeting if I could get some pointers from her. I do feel it's a shame that she has criticised other people's mealplans's when hers is being bulked up by processed supplements - FWIW Leiela, I worry about those shakes as I think there is too much protein for the body to be able to process, especially if they are being used regularly. I think eating natural proteins little and often is a much better way to go.

Quite agree :T I don't see what's wrong with beans on toast, omelettes or jacket potatoes and a filling either
  • Thanks Guys!

I know theres nothing wrong with egg/chips ands beans/toast but I dont normally have that twice in 1 week, but we do have them once a week as our FREE/easy meal. Eggs are FR though and chips are LF oven ones. Beans are Heinz and sometimes I grate a little cheddar on top.

Most of you know my health situation and Thurs/Fri I am at the hospital having treatment, so wont be able to eat alot or have the energy too.

    Hello there all,

Just wanted to pop on to say a couple of thoughts:

I've posted on the 50p a day challenge thread about my recent experiences of remaking a recipe I concocted 6-9 months ago, and being gutted to discover it had more than doubled in price  since then. (corned beef hash)

So I have concerns about people looking at posts, mine or otherwise, with costings from a while ago, as things have shifted a lot, and I'd hate for people to put themselves under an impossible pressure or budget!:o;)

Another thought I have is that one of the most interesting things I've found in discussing nutrition and health is how we each have different 'rules' on what's healthy. I aimed for '5 a day' but lots of the regular posters are managing an impressive 9 a day. This is great! I am glad that I was able to hear about the different opinions and make my own choice.:T

My belief is that we all try so hard to give ourselves and our families the best we can in the 'resource envelope' we have, and with our own understanding of what the best

Oh and one other thing, for anyone drinking/eating high protein shakes, supplements, etc: Have a look at some articles about supplementing your calcium supplies too, since masses of protein can leech calcium out of your system as your body metabolises it. Note: this is NOT an attempt to give medical advice, just a gentle friend-to-friend nudge to read up on calcium when on a high protein regime!

    With love,

    Weezl x

Hi Weezl. Do you happen to have any links or anything to these articles? I'd be really interested. Thanks!
  • Weezl-I am glad you have come on this thread. You have really inspired me and you helped me alot with my diet as you advised about my protein as I should be eating alot more than an average person.

Just noticed you are preggers too....congrats!!
