There's a clear difference between having a depressed economy and 'A Depression'.
It's the same difference between being depressed about something and being diagnosed with clinical depression. You need to be quite definite about which meaning is implied when the term is used - just because a commentator or poster uses the word 'depressed' or 'depression' it does not follow that they are using it in the technical sense!

The problem is though, that there isn't a technical sense. I think it's a bit of a pointless question, no offence.

All right, here's the whole thing again.....
the more people keep talking about it the deeper it will be and the harder it will be to get out of im fed up of people going on about doom and gloom .personally i dont buy a paper and avoid the news have done for years .chin up and get on with it i think these sort of posts should be banned off this site after all it wont be called moneysaving expert soon there will be nothing to spend

I agree with you that the recession/depression is partly fuelled by a lack of confidence, but that doesn't mean it will go away if we stop talking about it.
I hate to agree with GB, but it is global, so even if you had your way and MSE introduced censorship, it wouldn't make a scrap of difference.

Censorship never works. Rumours are often far more damaging than the plain, unvarnished truth. Furthermore, not all of us here see the kind of growth we've experienced in the last ten years as something worthy of being resurrected, so it's debatable whether this severe correction is as 'bad' as you suggest. A bit like the Fire of London, it's scary at the time, but good may come from it.

Chin up, by all means, but bury our heads in the sand? No.

i'm with you on this one - It's just like the kids in the back of the car. Is it a depression yet? Not yet. Is it a depression yet? Not yet. Is it a depression yet? Yes.

    Silence.

Is it recovery now? Not yet. Is it recovery now? Not yet. Is it recovery now? NO. And if you don't shut up Uncle Fungus Fighter will be coming to stay.

    Dead silence.

Well it was a good question after all, at least the PM thinks it is a world Depression. So a pertinant post I think.
    :j

So, given everyones expertese on here, how long do you think were all going to be in this situation? What will it be that takes us back to growth?

While there might be no universally agreed definition of 'Depression', there seems to be general consensus on a number of points where it differs from a 'Recession'. So I wouldn't say it's pointless enquiring if we are in 'A Depression' as opposed to if we are in a depressed market. (FTR I think we are not yet though we may get there if things continue as they are).

A recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job, and a Depression is when you lose your job.
    Iam in recession.........for now
I like that quote, but aint got a clue where i heard it.
