Have I killed my le creuset?

Options
Ok, a little while ago OH cooked curry in one of my beloved le creuset (the 24cm, perfect sized for most things one) & he sort of forgot about it, on a medium-high heat on the ceramic hob. Cue-VERY burnt curry(which didnt taste too bad if you ignored the black bits!) and VERY burnt le creuset interior :mad:. You could see the shape of the hob ring!

I soaked it, I scrubbed it, I brillo'd it, I soaked it in BIO washing liquid and couldn't get all the marks off, but to be honest that doesnt really bother me that much), the big worry is that part of the surface instead of being smooth, is now a bit rough, and it smells of washing powder (I got it out today to use and noticed the smell :() I have soaked today with washing soda, and washed with lots of hot soapy water but it still smells.
Now I have always used brillo and stuff on the inside of this with no problems, so whats happened to the finish, was it burned beyond repair? Has it been murdered? Can I save it? Please can anyone help me

Rough surface doesn't sound too good! You can buy a le creuset cleaner from their shops, I just boil coke in mine to remove any burnt layers - and I've had a few disasters!

I'm pretty sure that you aren't meant to use anything too abrasive on them though.

Get a couple of wooden spoons and then put the pot over OH's head and BANG BANG BANG until you turn blue. Then send him off to Debenhams, Amazon.co.uk, or wherever to get a replacement....it does sound like your pot has met a ghastly end.

I guess the only thing to do is try it - the bio soap has probably done the trick in terms of getting rid of the worst of it, but I guess it could well leave an after taste. Lots and lots of water boiled up and then replaced in it? With a cut potato to absorb whatever's in there? You could make him eat the potato, I suppose. If you need to replace it, don't spend a fortune on it - there's usually something kicking around at car boots - I got a lovely Danish made one for 50p a few years back - and Aldi were doing a special of some good quality looking stuff just before Xmas, which I'm sure will be around again. I like le Creuset, but its not the only decent brand out there!

My older le creuset has a rougher texture than the new stuff... probably from the numerous things that my gran, my mum and I have burned and scrubbed off them over the years (they're all older than me...)

As for the smell, try putting it through the DW if you've got one, and make sure you leave it with the lid off. You could also try boiling water with half a lemon in it.

It may take time for the smell/taste to go, but I'm sure it will eventually... like the stewed apricots that spent 24 hours in the aga in one of mine about 15 years ago... I'd be pushed to tell you which one it was now, but 5 years ago there was still evidence!
  • I soak mine in a weak solution of bleach overnight, usually comes up clean.

Here's a link to Le Creuset's help page

    http://www.lecreuset.co.uk/Care--Use/FAQs-for-Le-Creuset-Cast-Iron/

And there's a phone number at the bottom in case you need to call them for further advice/counselling;) (only joking about the counselling, though I'd consider it if my Le C pot became unuseable).

Thanks all, will try boiling up water with a lemon or two in it to see if can get rid of the washing powder smell, dont really care about the colour of it tbh, its more the rough surface i was worried about and the smell. Will try this and then test it with some veg gently sweated.

will see if I can fix it, if not he will buy me a new one, will have to wait for the sale though-they are about £100 on amazon at the moment, and I just bought a 28cm for less than £50 incl postage! So fingers crossed they do that again soon
