She's struggling with the mortgage and has been talking of selling it - but seems to think it will still be worth about £160k.

Well, the average selling price at the moment is 88% of asking price, so to be worth 160k, it needs to be nicer than this.

Though how anyone can be struggling with the mortgage now they're basically free, I don't know!

Maybe she should get a lodger and ride it out.
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

    .

Because she's not got a tracker mortgage - she's on a fixed rate and her working hours have been cut. That's why she's struggling. I suspect she's not the only one in this situation.
Not my problem really, was just trying to get some information for a friend, and thought this forum would be a good place to ask.
I'll stick to what I told her last night - get 3 EA's in to value.

Ah, and she can't pay the penalty to move to something cheaper, because she hasn't got the LTV any more due to negative equity. Fair point. How long is her fix though? If it's a 2-year and she bought in the Autumn of 07, she's only got to survive another ten months, even if it's on temporary handouts from family...

Yes, that's the problem exactly! I haven't got a clue how long the mortgage is fixed for, but I suspect it was 5 years.
She can move in with me if she gets desperate, I suppose, but then the extra money spent on her commute will probably negate any savings she'd make on household expenses sharing with me.
