Money to charity (CAFOD) - costs you 0!

I've just discovered that Co-op bank are doing a deal (until 31/3/06) of giving £ to CAFOD for just opening a credit card. They have 3 to choose from (including free 0% balance transfers for 6 months on 2 of their cards).

Open an account by 31/3 and £20 goes to CAFOD (ususally it is £15).

I applaud any mechanism which allows people to give to charity.

I have a general problem with charity cards - which is that it's not the most efficient way to give - e.g. you can't use gift aid.

But - in the case of this card - my main problem is that it's very bad value when compared to the new AmEx Red for example:

For a £10,000 spend, assuming you apply before March 31st - they will donate £47.50 (£22.50 in sign up bonuses, £25 in donation).

However, the same spend on an AmEx Red would have donated £112.50.

Just worth thinking about when applying for these sorts of things.

Fine if you do it for the charity donation, 0% period, and then cancel.

However if you plan to keep it after that for charity reasons then first read the Ditch Your Chariry Card article.
