Can M&S do this?

Options
Hi all!
I went in to get a refund on a coat that I had bought for my boyfriend. I have misplaced the receipt but I was not too worried as the jacket was very new and I checked online and it was the same price (I know M&S have the policy of refunding the store price if the receipt is missing)...I was a bit surprised, however, when they said they had to deduct the VAT as the receipt was missing...am I being a bit thick, but how is this ok? I cannot see how it would ever have been sold without the VAT added on, so how can they refund everything but the VAT?

Are you sure they didn't mean the difference between 17.5% VAT and 15% VAT - as they wouldn't know without the receipt if you had bought it before or after the rate changed?

i had just realised that is exactly what is meant!!! only thing is, the computer showed 149, the value i bought it at, so would this not already be the lowest value i could have bought it at already?

When you bought the coat (you say recently), you would have had a 2% vat discount. When you return the coat the till scans it at full price, but staff have to manually take the 2% back off, so you'll get back what you paid.

Don't dither about though, if it goes down in price, you'll only have the sale price back if you still can't find the receipt ;)

you would have paid roughly £144.91. If you bought other things aswell you may not have realised about the vat discount.
