They pay the initial 4% as an incentive for you to get the card. This is far more than the cut Amex make when you make a purchase and actually loses them money.

What are you struggling with? How much have you spent, and how much cash back have you been given?
  • Write to them and ask for a breakdown of how the cashback you recieved was calculated. If you find out, I'd be interested too.

(I agree that it's not as clear as it should be - a few examples on their website would probably help, but I don't suppose they're interested in doing so.)
  • Sorry for the shameless bump but I spent £19600 on my amex card in the last year and got £320 back. I did understand at the time that the cap was at £200 cashback for the first three months. So this means I got £120 for all of the other spending. Anyone any idea or been able to work this out for themselves?? I might throw in a letter asking them how they calculated it just out of interest...I was thinking there'd be at least £400 there and this was a while back before I'd spent so much. More than any thing though it's just bugging me that I don't understand it :)

You have to spend over 13.5k on the card to be able to get over 1% cashback after the bonus period.

Does this mean you only get 1.5% AFTER you spent £13.5k? EG I would get 1.5% on £6k? For me this would amount to £90 on top of the original £200 plus there would be cashback at .5% on 3500 (£17.50) and at 1% on £6k (£60) still adding up to £370 ish...

How much did you spend in the 3 months, and how much in the next 9?

I would guess probably about £5k in the first 3 months...I know it was def enough to qualify for the first £200 anyway since I timed it specifically because I was buying a lot of stuff around then...
