Do you know what type of jsa is he getting, income based or contributionary based?
He should contact his mortgage provider and advice them of the situation and pay something at least towards his mortgage account even if it is a small amount.
Does your daughter work?
Do they have children?0 -
he hasnt signed on yet but i am assuming he will get contribution based JSA. they have two children and my daughter doesnt work. she is awaiting the outcome of a claim for DLA for th younger one who has adhd.0

Sorry your daughter & son-in-law are in this position.
Hope this helps .... this thread now has a lot of detailed info about eligibility: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1464495 and yes, OP is right, the wait is 13 weeks.
Full details on SMI (support for mortgage interest) from the DWP are available here http://www.dwp.gov.uk/resourcecentre/mortgage-interest-changes.pdf
I would suggest they speak to their building soc today by phone. The more they do to try and secure their situation the better they'll feel. One option to run by the their lender is to extend the term of their loan so their monthly payments are lower if they won't allow a payment holiday. There is nothing to be lost by chatting to their lender so would urge them to do it.
Also, son in law needs to contact the jobcentre to start his claim as soon as he knows if his job has ended. He will be eligible for JSA from that date and the 13 week count starts from that date.0 -
sorry its taken so long to get back on here.only have the internet at my youngest daughters and havent been over here for a couple of weeks.
up to date: he is still in work, although this week he was the only one to be paid on time; everyone else got theirs on monday. he really isnt seeing the long term thing here, he wants to hang on to see what happens on the basis that if it all goes pear-shaped, he will be getting 3 months severence pay from 'somewhere'.
really should be looking for another job i think, but there you go. thanks for all your advice, i have kept it all for them should the worse thing happen.
thank you all again.xxxx0
