Used cars - how much can I haggle?

Interesting, so you are confident at purchasing at auction that the starter motor isnt fouled up from the cluch plate going, the injectors are all firing and not needing a new rail. My neighbour just did this on a Mondeo TDCi, after ploughing £1750 (at mate rates!) in to a £2700 car, it was reliable. If you do your modal homework, and know what to look for, or just strike it lucky, auction can be good, lots of newspaper articles springing up now encouraging novice auction visits tempting them in with low prices, but underplaying the pitfalls.

Yes, totally.
Do you think a dealer wont sell you the same car? Then hit you with excuses when you try to complain? Try to get them to fix it?
Dual mass flywheel do you mean? I've never priced one. I have no idea how much the fuel rail costs but I know I cured the exhaust fumes in the cabin fault with the TDCI's for around £18 (try that from Ford!).
At 3050 then 150 indemnity (generous estimate) and £1750 repairs, it takes it to dealer prices (still cheaper than Main Dealer) and thats on the assumption that you've bought a squib in the first place.
In 17 years of buying at auction, I have never bought a car that had a major fault.
It's purely scaremongering.
Just found a fuel rail on ebay for £25 ( I might just buy it)and a conversion kit to do the dual mass flywheel to a single for £170 (new dual mass flywheel approx £220).
Just out of interest, what age of Mondeo is it and whats the mileage?0 -
DMF £165
Clutch £50
Starter £40
This is roughly what they are.
No point doing the conversion kit unless you intend keeping the car for 10 years.0 -

The injectors were the killer, came in at £950 including the recoding and original diagnosis, resetting the codes and then a following diagnosis. He got the starter done at a seperate time to the DMF and clutch, The clutch and DMF cost him more than £230.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!
