Tax rebate following redundancy - how much?

Hi there,

I was made redundant in November and was paid in lieu of notice, therefore my earnings to the end of November were approx £44,000. I have been unemployed on JSA of £60.50 per week since, and don't expect to work again til the new tax year. Does anyone have any idea what kind of tax rebate I will get? I phoned HMRC and they were really annoying about it and wouldn't give me any idea, even with clear figures grrr.

The figures are:

Total pay: £44,076
Total tax: £12,601
Tax code: 145L

From December to the end of March I'll have received JSA of £1028.

If anyone could give me a range or ballpark figure please I'd be *really* grateful because I have no idea whether it could be £300 or £3000 and my google-fu is failing me.

TIA,

Louise

What do you mean about the £5000 allowance for a company car and medical insurance ? If you had a company car then we would need to know the taxable benefit for the full tax year and this would then have to be apportioned to the end of November. Without the tax deducted on your £44000 it will be impossible to do any calculations. Suggest you obtain the following and post it

    1) Actual pay and tax dets from P45 for when you left in November
    2) Details of the amount of jobseekers you expect to receive between when you first claimed and end of tax year.
    3) The taxable benefit figures for your company car and medical insurance.

Bear in mind you won't get any repayment until the end of the tax year and if you gave parts 2&3 of your P45 to your benefit office they are the ones that will calculate and send the repayment

It might be useful to try and obtain P11d details for the current year from your previous employer now so that HMRC can alter your code number before the end of the tax year.

  • Thanks to the two posters.

I've now entered the figures so if anyone could give me a ballpark figure I'd be very very grateful, or a link to somewhere where I could work it out myself would be fab too.

Can't really help without actual benefit details.

I've put in the post that I'm on Jobseekers allowance of £60.50 and by the end of March I'll have received £1028 - could you tell me what further information you would require please?

As I said in a previous post, you will need your P11d details and provide them to HMRC in order for them to amend your code and give you the correct refund. If we could know these details, we can work out your refund.

  • That's what HMRC told me, but said this would be at the end of the tax year. They said they couldn't change my tax code yet until I was off JSA and in new employment. I really cannot understand how next year's tax code will impact on my refund for 08-09. What figures are on that document that won't be on my P45?

Forget next years tax codde, this has nothing to do with your repayment.
Any repayment due relies on your code number for this year being accurate. In order to do this, you need your P11d details. They do not appear on your P45, but your code number does. I have suggested that you ask your ex employer for these in advance of 5 April so that HMRC can give you an accurate code and the JC can give you the correct refund. ANd we can tell you how much the refund will be!
Trust us, we know of what we speak.

  • Thanks fengirl, I've now emailed my ex employment and requested the P11d. I just didn't want to get in touch with them unless entirely necessary seeing as they unfairly made me redundant and I'm still seething over it!

Your employer is under no obligation to give you a P11d during the tax year. If you have a copy of your tax code for the current year can you tell us what the restriction is for car and medical benefit. A rough calculation can then be done apportioning the full years benefit by the number of days in the tax year you had the benefit - the actual last day you had the company car would be useful.
