Tax credit nightmare!

since my child has been born 2004 we have had nothing but mistakes and problems caused by tax credits, the last mistake i ended up getting my local mp involved to get it sorted once and for all and just as i thought we finally had it sorted they decided in april 2008 to stick large amounts of money (large to me anyway) and my other half's bank accounts lucky i check my bank every day and so within a few hours of it being put into my bank i rang them to inform them i was told a manager had to deal with it and would ring me back i waited all day in the end i rang them back saying he still has not rung me i don't want this money in my bank it is clearly a mistake and if it is not mine i do not want it i was told again someone will ring back nothing i rang again and again getting nowhere fast in the end i was told to put it into an ISA account to gain the interest on it until they noticed the mistake!!!!!!! i mean really anyway a few months later my partner left but returned three months later tax credits always being informed of every move and had all the paper work they needed we have never not told them anything the only thing we have not given them is blood i was starting to feel like i worked for them! now it is Feb 2009 and they have only just now noticed the mistake when i told my other half he informed me that during our split he had rung them himself and chatted to someone who informed him the money was not a mistake and that it was actually owed to him he used this money to pay a deposit on the place he was living during the split along with bills etc so now they want the money back i have put a dispute in but am i wrong in doing so? i know it was the mistake of tax credits and i spent a life time on the phone trying to get them to deal with it but he should have left the money in the isa ? would you go the dispute route or just arrange a payment scheme with them maybe?

Someone will be along shortly with some help.
I would only like to suggest that in future you open your own bank account and have your money/benefits paid into your account.
It is your responsibility to look after you own money.
    Good Luck

I hope your partner can prove the phone conversation with a name and date. Otherwise I would think it would be very difficult to argue that you shouldn't pay it back as you knew it was an overpayment which was why it was in an ISA. Was the ISA in his name? didn't think you could get joint ISAs
