Watching Dvd on home tv via pc - how?

Im not really into all this DVD stuff but someone has given me a DVD that I would like to watch.

The problem is that I only have a DVD player on my pc and the thought of the family having to sit round a pc to watch this movie isnt very pleasant!

My tv is inches away from my pc is there anyway to connect the 2 together? The tv is a scart one.

Thanking you.

The PC will need an s-video socket, if you have one it will probably be close to where the monitor plugs into. Then you can use something like this to connect PC to TV. It won't be dvd quality. Don't get the leads from maplin, they're a rip off, goto a small electrical retailer somewhere, look on yell.com

You could always buy a cheapo dvd player for 30 quid :)
  • I have just bought a Technika DVD recorder (thanks to the Grabbit board!!) and have installed it with my TV, however I am not very good at this sort of techie stuff and I don't know how to set it up so that it records from my TV. I don't have a TV aerial just a cable box and I don't know how to link the three things together so that the DVD recognises the channels on the cable. At the moment when I scan for channels in the set up it tells me that there are no channels. Can anyone help? At the moment I have the DVD recorder linked to the TV with scarts and the Cable box linked to the TV with scarts. I have tried linking the DVD recorder to the cable box with a third scart lead but that doesn't help either. Sorry it this sounds like I'm thick but I am!!

If your graphics card has s-video out (a small circular port), then you can get an s-video to scart cable. Using one now.

    Got mine from here:
    http://www.svideo.com/svideoscart.html

for about $20 for a 3.7m cable, which works out at around £13.

If you do a search on eBay for s-video to scart leads there's loads on there for about a fiver (including phono leads which you will need if you want the sound coming out of your tv speakers.

Again, depending on what outputs your Video card has....

If it has the yellow composite RCA connection, this is on most TV's and you could probably use any RCA cable like audio cable red/white if you do not have a yellow video.

Most TV's have RCA inputs (3 x RCA, one yellow for video, and red and one white, for audio left and right). You could do the audio from your PC (it must be close if you are connecting a video cable) and the video through the yellow RCA.

This is not the best for quality as composite is probably the 2nd worst quality (s-video 3rd worst), but it sounds like you want a quick fix without spending any money.

Be careful with s-video, certain cards have different connections (ATI springs to mind)
