There are four of us doing the same job in my department. All on the same grade. We've all been here for between five and twenty years.

Before Christmas, we had an email from Head Office saying that they wanted to turn one of our positions into a supervisor's position and that the promotion should be done ASAP. It wasn't just our site, but several sites across the world. Our boss was reluctant because he said he didn't think any of us could do it (rubbish, because the job is essentially our job with a bit of admin and supervisory skills and at least two of us have previous experience in this), and has done nothing until now.

Now it transpires that he wants to advertise the supervisor's job externally (ie: in The Standard and The Metro). We are able to apply as well, but if the job is given to an external applicant, one of our positions will be redundant and the incumbant will have to go.

Can they do this?

as it is a new position that is being made within the company ,i think that lawfully they have to advertise the job externally ,so i'm not sure but from what i am picking up is that one job is being made redundant and another position is being made ,so yes i'm afraid they can do it sorry

Unfortunatly I think he can do it, as the supervisors job is officially a different role.

Only some Public Sector jobs have to be legally advertised externally.

Basically you boss is being a 'tard, however as he is the boss that's his right (some might say obligation ).
I'd suggest to him that looking internally 1st at least saves the cost of recruitment and might save the cost of redundancy.

you and your colleages have no growth/future there, so when an opertunity arrives elsewhere then take it!
