Correct me if I am wrong but isn't it the same benefit just under a different name!

    No in a nutshell.

Disability Living Allowance has two components, care and mobility. The Care component is paid at three different rates (lower, middle and higher) and the mobility component at two rates (lower and higher). It can only be claimed by people under 65 years, however if they are already receiving DLA when they turn 65, providing they still have care and/or mobility needs they can carry on claiming (*albeit there are a couple of other rules attached).

Attendance Allowance has only one component, Care. It is paid at two rates, middle and higher. It can only be claimed by those over 65 years old.

So, although the care components are reasonably similar, it is the lack of a mobility component that is the main difference between the two.

  • Hi Peter.
Thanks for your reply and I'm sorry that I have not responded sooner. When you say that if you are getting DLA at 64 when you reach 65 and you continue to meet the requirements you then continue to get care/ mobility at the higher rate, do you as in my original question get your car tax as now exempt or do you then have to pay it?.
On the subject of Incapacity Benefit I thought that you do not get that after reaching 65 or have I misunderstood you on that one?. Bill.

    Hi Bill,

Yes, providing you still qualify for DLA after you turn 65, you can carry on receiving it (and the free tax disc etc if on high rate mobility),

I corrected my posting (old age creeping in) as it is Attendance Allowance you have to claim once 65 (unless already claiming DLA).

Forget about the Incapacity Benefit bit, it was my mistake.
