We currently have pay as you go, dial-up broadband (with tiscali) and are wanting to upgrade to broadband.
Would like to go wireless as well, but not being it minded at all have a few questions which I hope aren't too dumb :-[ :-[
Firstly is it possible just to buy a broadband router and update tiscali account to broadband even tho they don't currently offer home wireless broadband? If so which router would be needed?
If the above isn't possible, what would the process be in changing from tiscali dial-up to, say, wanadoo wireless?
Thanks in advance for any advice

No disrespect (I'd like to know some answers too because, now that broadband has at last reached my village, my 2005 project will be to upgrade to a laptop with wireless broadband so I only have to plug in when I want to print something - unless that's now possible wirelessly too).
However, I suspect Fran and friends will come back quicker if this is moved to the Techie forum.30 years, 217 days!0 -

I agree. I have moved it here to increase chances of some good responses for you.

to show you an easy example
compare it as broadband is your telephone line.
the router is your telephone..
therefore once you have the broadband in place, you can buy any phone (router)
so basically the router is the hardware that connects you to the net.
make sense?0 -

I'm not sure I do - I'm pretty - er very - dense when it comes to this sort of thing.0 -
Having only managed to connect one laptop in the house wirelessly I am probably not the best person to give advice, but we bought a router from ebay - a netgear and thought we were sorted, but found that it didn't have a modem in it, so we would have had to buy that separately and with an ethernet connection which seemed hard to find, so we ditched the idea and just bought a router with a built in modem and firewall and then got cards for the laptop and pc. We have found that the new laptop picked up the signal immediately but that the pc with a card inside it (you just slip it in theback and attach an annentae) only works in the same room (rather defeating the object). If I were doing it again I would go to a pc shop and ask for a router with built in modem and cards (they are different if for pc or laptop) from the same company for ease. I believe having spoken to quite a few people that netgear are good. It is great when it works, but frustrating when it doesn't!0

they are 2 seperate issues you need to address..
1. you will need a broadband connection (ignore the wireless part at this stage, you just require broadband)
so decide what package you require as to compare prices and availabilty(you could always post how long you will be inline for, if gaming will be played, etc and so people can point you in the direction of a decent isp)
2. the wireless part is just the equipment you use to conect the pcs to your broadband.(again if you state how many pc's/laptops you are looking at connecting people can opint you towards some)
hth a bit more. anything you dont understand just post and always someone around to try and help0 -
