Grrr bloody students loans company!

Got a letter from them today demanding repayment because I earn over £15,000. I'm still a student (and still getting loan installments) and i'll be lucky to have made £7,000 by April with my part time job.

When I called they said that i need to start paying! I offered to fax my most recent payslip but all they want is money and they said it will come out my wages next month! What can I do?

Sorry but that doesn't sound right at all. I've never heard of SLC writing to people to "demand" repayment of ICR loans because the repayments should begin automatically.

People enter repayment status the April following graduation or withdrawal from study, and repayments begin once you're earning over £1250 per month. If you're a student on your first degree then you shouldn't be making repayments because you shouldn't be in Repayment. If, however, you've done one degree and graduated and are now doing another degree while working then you'll haave to start repaying.

It would be really helpful if you could transcribe the letter or better still, scan it and post it here?

Write to them, enclosing your recent payslips.

  • Do you have "old" loans, as is this your second course/attempt? or Have you changed courses along the line? When I changed from a 3 year course to a 4 year course, I found that my first 3 years worth entered repayment a year early (The april of 4th year). Not that it matter as I never earned enough to break the weekly/monthly limits....

But even if that was the case, any repayment should have been deducted by you employer though your payslip. And the SLC dont know what your earning atm as the HMRC won't have told them yet (the tax year hasnt finished yet). So I am very confused.

Are your weekly earnings over what you would be bringing in on £15,000 pa? If so, you could find that you have to pay something as it's not just based on annual income but on what you earn month by month.

No, this is my first degree, did an HNC before but it's classed as continuous as i cashed this in to get into 2nd year at uni. Never re-sat a year or anything like that so i don't know where this is coming from.

I earn £500 per month after tax.

Took the letter to the uni advice place and they are dealing with it, apparently this is quite common.

i know people have had automatic deductions because of an error by HR put their monthly income through as weekly - so they went above the threshold! glad the uni advice people are dealing with it - it would be great if you could update us with any progress, just in case it helps anyone else in a similar situation!!
