New Fuse Box

Hi guys just wondering about an average price for a fuse box?

I currently have an old fuse box, the one with the ceramic/porcelain re-wireable fuses at 5, 20, and 30 amps respectfully.

Last night the missus smelt something burning and it was the fuse box, I immediately turned off all the electric and found one of the fuses so hot to touch I had to use a towel to remove it. I let the whole thing cool down and reinserted the rest, which are working fine.

My problem is that I haven't got a spare 30 amp fuse, I need 2, and I have the choice of working plug sockets or a working cooker.

I can't find anywhere to buy these old fuses from.

  • You need an electrician, if the fuse is glowing you are running near max. for that fuse not to blow, what about the wiring to the cooker in the wall / floor space, is that glowing too?

Could be loose/bad connection but please don't look at it yourself. It is mains power in there and lethal even when turned off. The live current and exposed power leads are there and cannot be switched off because that is the switch itself.

This is what the fuse box looks like the ones we use are on the right. Nothing was glowing the fuse second in from the right was the really hot one, its the one that does the plug sockets.

What did you have running at the time? if it was the iron, 2 eletric heaters the hover and a 3000 watt router in the garage then you were trying to pull to much power.

Basically you need an electrician. To fit you a new consumer unit this should be about £200 to £300 but the problem will be if he finds other problems or the wires arn't good enough to be used. You will be alot safer with a new consumer unit.

By safer do you mean from being elecrocuted or safe as in the house wont burn down?

I got an electrician to look he said it was fine. I was running a streamer to steam off some wall paper the missus was making a tea and put the self heating washer and self heating dishwasher on.

Apparently the house can't handle that... I know better for next time.

Cant afford the expense just now the guy seemed to think with the age of the house I stand a chance of needing a rewiring. Just had a boiler fitted! Bloody house!!!
