Are prepay meters more expensive than dd?

We're currently paying £130 a month to Scottish Power for our gas and electricity. This has recently gone up from £70 a month due to the readings that my partner gave them at the end of January, and we're now £230 in debit with them.

My partner wants to move over to prepay meters for both the gas and electricity and he likes the whole "pay as you go" idea.

Personally I don't like the idea, I think it's a waste of money as I'm sure they're more expensive! He thinks they're the same price though.

Who's right??

  • I'm sure someone will be more helpful than me but generally Prepay meters are more expensive

I wouldn't go on one no way.

Remember that over the winter you will use more energy, so this will (should) even out slightly in the summer months.

    Hi

Historically prepayment prices have been more expensive; this has mainly been due to the number of different tariffs available to non prepayment meter customers.

Suppliers tend to offer customers with standard meters discounts for things like online account management and paying by Direct Debit whereas prepayment customer do not get these, this is where the saving is usually made.

Some companies (but maybe not all) have now made sure there prepayment prices are in line with their standard tariffs for standard meters.

As far as I am aware prepayment customers still do not get discounts that standard meter customers can receive.

All in all a standard meter gives you a wider range of options in terms of tariffs and even additional discounts and is probably the cheaper choice.

First of all, PPM are not entirely 'pay as you go', more of 'pay on account' - it is still possible to build up a debt with them as many previous threads on here will verify.

Whether you pay more for a PPM depends on the supplier. Geneally you will pay more for a PPM than paying monthly by DD since you won't get the discounts many suppliers offer for monthly payment by DD.

If your partner get his way, you might want to check out ebico who will charge you the same rate however you decide to pay.
