Super post Yategirl.
I would love to know how you get on with this - I have posted (somewhere?) about my monthly DD for electricity - and when I discussed this with kids they have started to get into the turn off habit and we are already paying less for leccy.
What I want to know is - how do you calculate how many Kwh an appliance uses? I don't want to buy one of those meters (Owls?) because it would throw me into a blind panic.
Also I am on economy 7 - so my nightrate (for 7 hrs) electricity is 2.something p per Kwh - about 10-15% of the day rate.
I already run washer at night (has a delay timer on) charge mobiles etc up overnight. Have a wind up radio too.
Have stopped leaving microwave on all day. Hardy use tumble drier.
Any geniuses out there who can tell me how to calculate appliance consumption?Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I have ordered a meter, need to shock my lot into how much things cost to run:rolleyes:0 -
Ive no idea.
how much a Kwh of energy costs should be on the last bill but as for one of those energy measuring contracptions ive no idea

My post DID NOT say I use perfume 'every day of my life' but it's something I do use frequently. I used that as an example because some people, earlier, were implying that presents should not be useful, but luxuries. We all have our own ideas of luxuries. If I use something - then it's been useful - whether or not some regard it as a luxury. Please do not 'misquote'. Incidentally I didn't use any formatting with my fonts either - but I'm assuming you've done that so you can make your own point.
And there are people who put a lot, if not all of their Christmas spending on cards, then spend a few months paying it off - then do the same the next time they have a problem or the next Xmas. Like Martin says, here and on TV/radio - set a sensible budget and save for it. I know that some people use a credit card and pay it off in full every month. What happens? - well, companies decide you're not a good customer - because you aren't providing profit for the CC company - and threaten to close your account. Companies want customers they can make money from. They want us to be in debt, not to pay it off every month and that's why they up credit limits without being asked. But you're on this website. You know this.
Disagree with me by all means - that's your privilege. But please don't twist what I said or claim I wrote something I didn't.
thank you.
Sorry but you've made too many assumptions there:D I'll start with what you think I *misquoted* you on. I said I could not consider perfume a necessity, and I said this was coming from someone who uses it every day. ME! I use perfume every day:D You may wish to withdraw your accusation.
And all I can say about credit cards is, my DH and I have had them for over 25 years and have never paid one penny in interest. (We had them when they charged £10 a year if you didn't pay interest) I have never had a card withdrawn or the threat of such. They do make profit from the retailer even if the cardholder repays in full. I do not dispute that the companies want people to pay interest. Seems your information is either wrong, or perhaps DH and I have had a rare experience?
Yes I did highlight in your post the bits I was referring to. I'm sorry this offended you so I haven't done it again. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
And I need to know how much a microwave uses.... I havent a clue what a Kwh is !
Kilo watt hour - it's the units they charge you for
New reading - old reading = Kwh used (then there are standing charges to add)
It's a lot easier to work at than the gas because the 'calorific value' of gas alters (apparently).
So I've got as far as a Kwh = 1000 watts per hour (I am supposing here - be gentle).
So an 800w microwave running for an hour (at full whack) will use 80% of the price of a Kwh - 16p an hour. (at my 20p per Kwh rate which is my highest rate - there are others!)
But my microwave won't use it's full power when just switched on showing the time.
Have to say though, these are assumptions and the Microwave is the only thing I know the rating of because it's on the door.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I looked carefully at your post - your 'uses perfume everyday' came before the word 'quote' so it appeared you were quoting me - I did realise that you might be the regular perfume user. So I did double check.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I'm sorry I don't understandIf you look at my ORIGINAL post, the word *quote* does not feature. The post has not been edited, so there never was *quote* in there
It features two sentences about perfume that I have cut and pasted below:
As regards necessities as gifts, sorry, but by no stretch of the imagination can I call perfume a necessity:rotfl: This from one who uses perfume every day of her life;)
Where am I quoting you? The wink smiley indicates it's ME I'm talking about.
I'd be interested on your opinion of my experience with never paying any interest to a credit card holder, and yet never had any problems or threats from them? Do you really believe I'm unusual? You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Sammy, great news on the vouchers:T You'll be able to enjoy spending them at Christmas now:DYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0
