I need a book, need things in writing before I can get my head around them. Its no good talking to me, ask the OH --goes in one ear & out the other
But I cant seem to stick to the grocery challenges, cant seem to stick to a menu plan, cant cook, cant do anything these days -- It all seems to have gone downhill since I hit 50 !!

I was brought up from 40's onwards so remember a lot from how folk lived then. Hated the ice on the windows and it seemed the only way to get warm in front of the fire was by turning my legs into a sort of mottled red pattern...........mind you that was before the days of loft insulation, draft proofing etc. (I think -not something I took much notice of then except I know it was really cold in the winter. Hot water bottles were a must but weren't they awful to wake up to in the morning all cold !!
Financial hardship through the 70's taught my kids a lot so they're not wasteful at all, just the opposite in fact.I hated them going without things that they're friends had but maybe it was for the best in the long run
I'm a great believer in things happening for reasons that we may not be aware of at the time.
We have to prepare for all eventualities I think and it pays to err on the side of caution. The increase in household bills worries me =thankfully the mortgage will be paid off in October but by then everything else will no doubt have increased !
Mustn't grump though.............told myself I wouldn't, even when I was trying to print something out for my son and the ink ran out !!!!!!!!!!! No....I kept my cool andjust muttered a bit.......................lol
That`s a thing! you just don`t see people these days with those mottled legs, haven`t seen them for a while either.
I guess people have always had ingenuity in dealing with problems that crop up. My Aunt knew someone who lived in an old and very draughty house, and even with heavy curtains etc it was still very chilly round the ankles. When she called round one evening, they were sat with their feet inside cardboard cartons, they said they felt a bit daft, but it kept the feet warm.
Like you, I think that there is usually a reason for things even if we don`t know it at the time. These fora are great for tips on how to make things go further, some I knew and had forgotten, but others I didn`t know about at all. I wish I was fitter, I would really have a go at growing some veg, but the best I can do at the moment is some strawberries and some tomatoes in hanging baskets. They are doing ok though, and I am quite proud of them.
Sorry that your ink ran out, but you did really well to keep your cool - well done you.The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

Mary, we used to call that mottled effect "fire tartan" and we always got the threat of getting "fire tartan" if we tried to stand nice and close to the fire.

We just grow our veg in pots bilberry - most of the garden is either turned over to wild life, flower beds or concrete (we laughlingly call this a patio........lol)with tubs of shrubs and flowers.
OH sort of created an area for his veg - laid a lot of paving slabs down we'd had given us (more to make it look attractive than anything else) and we've got a potato barrel, two tubs of runner beans (had the first crop yesterday!), smaller tubs of carrots, some courgettes, spinach and a load of herbs.
OH would love to have more space but I get the feeling he might not like the hard work that goes with it................lol Oh, we've also got tomatos in hanging baskets and some upright ones.........in fact more tomatos than we need as we had the plants given to us and OH can never say 'no'.
Never heard of feet in cardboard boxes before............now there's a tip worth knowing if it gets really cold. Mind you, wouldn't have worked at my grans house.......she had the door open rain or shine no matter what season it was............lol
Trying to make sons birthday card is turning into a nightmare. Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't his 40th and really I don't know whether he's expecting a 'special' one or not.........he's usually happy with whatever I do. So, tomorrow I'll get more ink (gulp !-not cheap!) and carry on. I want to get it out of the way before I get more confused with all the images of the beatles, john lennon and music in general that I've got scattered around me............lolMary

hmph......*sulks*
Ive gto two little tomato plants in tubs - they are tumbling toms - but theres no flowers or tomatoes on them yet - whats going on?? one is abotu a foot and a half high and the other slightly smalelr - they are tumbling toms but not very tumbling i must say - brought as seed so know they are - i see all these tall tomato plants on teh market with lots of tomatoes on already - i want some to start harvesting.
Ive got tomato feed too - should i boost this or will it kill them off. Ive lost most me crops - bar tomatos and spring onions as they all werent planted out early enoughadn sort of wilted and died off.
Plus can i plant anythgin at the minute?? that may grow pretty quickish??

Hi all
That mottled pattern you get on your legs from sitting near the fire was always called "cornedbeef legs" in our home :rotfl: my dad was forever getting it...
Mary -im growing loads of veggies in pots -my POTio aPOTment..i have just bagged up 5 meals worth of various beans for the freezer and have my 1st aubergine and some patty pans to use now too :j , and at last the 1st tomatoes are starting to ripen
..had loads of salad leaves and cumbers off so far and the broad beans are frozen for autumn/winter
I have just started planning what im going to grow next year and what things i won't bother with ...determined to grow what gives the best return.
I love this thread -some of the great ideas are being stored to memory...it shows just how much easier life is when we all band together in the face of bad times -and share ideas..keep the great ideas coming everyone
Shaz...brilliant..we must have crossed posts...glad we weren't the only ones with cornedbeef legs lol-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

Wow, I am impressed and envious, I have always admired those old cottage gardens where they seem to combine plants and veg together. I know you can get some very pretty ornamental cabbages, but don`t know what they taste like. We have a dog, so I am a bit happier to grow anything a bit higher up ( if you see what I mean) but a raised bed would be good I suppose. Herbs are quite pricey aren`t they, so they would be good to grow, what varieties have you planted?
I am sure your son will love what you make for him, always nice when someone makes something especially for you.The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0
