chargeback poser

Hi, I want to except credit card payments into my paypal account when selling on e-bay. I am aware of chargeback scams so how long will it take for paypal to let me know if a charge is fraudulant. I could hang on to the items while i'm sure its legit. but how long do you think that would take.

Hello, theres not really a time I can give as to how long you should wait....

You have to remember that 95% of eBayers are nice people just like you and me and are not looking to scam anyone out of anything. I think the sort of thing you're suggesting is what happens if someone uses a credit card that has been stolen...well the chances of this happening to you are relatively low as a seller...the best advice I can give is this, when accepting PayPal payment:

    1) Only send items to verified buyers with CONFIRMED addresses.
    2) Be wary of low feedback bidders who bid on expensive items
    3) Only send items using a fully insured and traceable service; such as Royal Mail Special Delivery.

    Hope this helps

  • Yeah i know i'm just being overcautious i guess its just keeping your wits about you. So if a sellers address is confirmed what does this mean? I know it sounds like a dumb question but i'm new to this.

    Hi,

Remember there's never a silly question on this board! Everyone needs to learn...

A confirmed address basically means that the persons bank account/credit card information matches up to that of their actual location, so you can be sure when sending an item that it will be going to the person who paid for it....its just an added security measure to help the seller.

3 years, 2,000 sales all but 10 on paypal and never had a chargeback.

Follow the advice in #2 and you should find the same.

Can i just say - if you hold on to items whilst you wait to hear if theres been fraudulent activity then your ebay feedback would not be very good. You would be getting negs and neutrals for not sending items out within a reasonable time. Paypal suggest sending out an items as soon as you have had payment but if that can't be done then within 1 week.

I apologise if i have misunderstood your question.

  • Thanks everyone for your advice. I only intended to hold on to any expensive items for a max of 1week and i would always make bidders aware of this before bidding. but you have reassurred me and i dont feel as dumb now
    thanks again

i use it all the time for LOW value items, having lost £200 about 4 years ago, i'd never in my right mind recommend anyone use it for higher value transactions

    By doing that you will:

    a. Achieve a lower price as quite a few buyers will not bother bidding. I know I wouldn't.

    b. Get negs from those buyers who don't read the listing and want the goods they paid for delivered promptly.
