i have a company chasing me for a debt 5 and a half years old, the strange thing is my credit file shows it being settled 1 month after default date which was registered in late 03, but i know i never payed it and can,t believe any one else would, any help on where i stand legally would be much appreciated !!!!!!!

Legally the debt still stands but was obviously sold on after you defaulted. Unless you live in Scotland then it's not statutebarred I'm afraid.
If you are in a position to offer them a full and final payment I'd suggest going that route
