Stop what you can - it doesn't all have to be the system tray !

    Vit

Absolutely...that's why I suggested using spybot's system startup tool...when you look at some of the stuff listed on your machine, the first question can often be "!!!!!! is that and where did it come from?!?!?!?" Spybot's tool has some good info from Paul Collins Startup list, and remember, google is your friend ;)

Sounds like software don't dump the laptop, last resort is an OS reinstall. If you're able try downloading a linux liveCD and run it if it works no probelms its most likely software.

Back up all you data before doing anything though.

or even better, get spybot and stop the acer prog (and probably one or two others you may not have realised were there) running at startup via advanced/tools/system startup......and you get to use the Immunise feature to stop some nasties even getting to your browser and you ca nuse it as a backup scanner too...just make sure NOT to activate the tea-timer facility

on your HDD, either remove the partitions altogether, or move all your documents/photos/music etc., i.e. not any windows or program files onto the empty partition....what size are the partitions ?? This in itself could be causing file corruption if you're trying to squeeze a quart into a pint pot !!! At least, do disk cleanup and defrag on both partitions to help ease things...normally if a disk is partitioned, it's so you leave windows and any progs you need in (usually the smaller) one, and everything else in the other..agree with psted..lappy trying to scan HDD on startup 'coz it wasn't shut down properly...get it to shut down ok and that will probably stop :)

Thanks Gunjack, spybot all installed now without teatimer etc and stopped the acer prog

The C & D drives are about 55GB each. Not sure how to remove the partition?

    Thanks

WinPatrol is a better program than Spybot for startup programs check it out it can delay programs for fast boot etc.

asin - the point being, the OP doesn't need to DELAY, they need to STOP the crap running !!

Pyth - firstly, how's it running now you've killed those processes ??

Secondly, your HDD. If your partitions are 55GB each, for now just move everything that's not Windows or program files into the empty one...and once they're in your D: drive, remember to delete them from your C: drive to free up the space. Then, do the disk cleanup and defrag on BOTH partitions (you'll have to do each in turn)...should make a big difference

Also, I've had a thought...make sure your page files are set to system managed, may have to do this for each drive depending on how it's set up. Find the setting in control panel/system/advanced/performance/advanced/virtual memory....

    see how you get on...

Gun, - the point being that the main purpose of winpatrol is to stop things running that you dont need and delay things that you want but dont need straight away on boot. Whereas Spybots main purpose is to stop spyware, which compare to the likes of superantispyware it doesn't do very well.

however, the system startup tool is very good and works well. Some of spybot's other features are worthwhile too, and it's easy to use and understand for people who aren't endowed with a heap of techie knowledge. I personally don't use the scanner, use MBAM, SAS and spyware doctor for that. The point is it was a quick'n'easy "win" for the OP....
