Iron Safety

In the cause of personal safety I feel the need to post this advice.
My wife was doing some ironing when there was a loud bang, on investigation I found that the iron lead had shorted out appox half way along it's length and had scorched the carpet black by her foot. My obvious concern was that she was unharmed. I examined the lead, for any external wear and tear, and there was none but there was two very small holes were the electrical discharge had occured. I could feel with my thumb nail the broken inner wire within the cable, the cable was a PVC covered Iron lead not the best type of cable to use on an iron. In my oppinion It should be a more flexible rubber and cotton covered flex as used on nearly every iron I have ever seen. The Makers Rowenta were informed, but because the iron was out of guarantee "THEY" offered to test it at my expense of £15 +p&p refunding me if they found a manufacturing fault (oh Yeh). I made it clear to them that I was not really after a replacemant iron but that they should look at their policy of using this type of cable. I did not detect any real concern by Rowenta customer service even though this was the second time this had happened to us
This was the second Rowenta Iron to do this and it was a free replacement for the first one which had done the same thing. These irons are not designed to be repaired so for the sake of a cable replacement this £45 iron was now useless.
A long ramble perhaps but worth it if I inspires readers to check out there own Irons and avoid any potentialy serious accidents, electric shocks are not forgiving

Can't see why you have posted in This Site: Questions & suggestions
Domestic appliances fail all the time and it is not a question or suggestion regarding this site!
An iron is not useless just because the cable has failed. The cable can easily be replaced by any competent electrical repair shop. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You miss the point my friend I was highlighting a safety aspect as a warning to any who are interested,"Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0
