What a strange post! Although not unusual for a physicist in my experience to base an argument on a false premise.

Your argument is irrelevant for most people as the majority of gas heating is by radiators.

Even those with gas fires in a living room are unlikely to have chimneys in the other rooms in their house.

Gas prices are in the region of 2p kWh, electricity around 7p kWh. Most gas boilers are in the region of 90% efficient, where electricity is close to 100%.

Perhaps you would care to get your calculator out and produce a rational argument without the assumption that all gas heating is by gas fires c/w chimneys in every room in the house.

No, Cardew. My argument is not irrelevant. I don't know if you have ever noticed, but a gas boiler IS a gas fire. The only difference is that it heats a boiler of water instead of having a reflector to heat the room. Heating the room with a hot water radiator is an even less efficient way of heating your room than a direct gas fire; and, human beings being what they are, I'll bet there are radiators on in unoccupied rooms, aren't there? And when you go out on the town at night, and you turn the heating off, the radiators are still throwing out heat into the empty rooms as the water cools down. And if the pipes should happen to burst...

If you do a comparasion search you should be able to just search for capped products only. I do know that Scottish Power have capped tarriffs.

    For whom it may concern.

The above quote is not worth answering and I was remiss in not reading some of his other posts before ‘daring’ to disagree with his views – you may care to read some.

However should anyone take the quote seriously I suggest that they take professional advice before they install gas fires for heating in lieu of radiators or search this forum for the cost effectiveness of gas fires.

Ok, you put a gas fire in every room and see if your bills go up, smartass.

  • We're not on gas, and we have no intention of going on gas. My original postings were comments not on what costs are now; but what they are going to be in about a year's time. And by then, the gas bills are not going to make pretty reading. I'll leave you to the tender mercies of President Putin. He's really a nice man, you know.

  •:confused: Am i imagining it?..riddle me this........the other day British Gas announced its fear that bills may go up shortly by as much as 25%....for the consumer....and as martin says this may just be a ploy....and we might expect only a 15% rise.
did anyone else happen to catch a small news item today concerning scottish power....??
they released a statement giving details of yearly profits......it was something outrageous....like 42 million or something...
now ......how come a company like scottish power posts such large profits ....two days after such an annoucement from BG?... ..I can stomach a price rise of 15% if it is justified......but for one energy provider to blatantly show just how un-justified that rise might well be.......makes me sick.

If the energy providers are making that much profit...(and clearly they are)...how is it that me and you are getting fleeced again?... .
 Omg I over-spend by That Much every month ? !!! ,searching for ways to make ma money go mucho further.........
  • I'm sorry i got it all wrong...... in fact the press release states as follows :

In its third quarter results, Scottish Power said profits from its energy retail and wholesale arm increased by £11 million to £52 million in the three months to the end of December.

i rest my case......i would love to know why we are facing such a price hike shortly when they report such profits?.....
