Mmmm...a bit strange to say the least. Where is the message coming from, I doubt it is your AV programme ? Personally I've never seen that sort of message and I'd be more inclined to run Ad Aware and Spybot SD.

When we were activating firewall, spybot etc, the msges were popping up and stateing that we should go onto https://www.patchnow.com or updatemenow.org. The thing we needed costs $30. As someone had mentioned something about patch... then we saw the message

It mentioned that without having this protection the pc has unexspected, inproper, shut downs and can cause some kind of code deletion and other problems. I was hopeing that we could get it cheaper from somewhere

Personally I'd do nothing because I think it is a scam from some site trying to flog an unneeded programme. If you've ran your AV and something like Ad Aware and nothing is found then I'd forget all about it. I've had the odd box appearing suddenly while I've been surfing which urges me to buy some spyware or AV programme (usually completely unheard of). A scam in every case. It is difficult to advise someone else though, you must make up YOUR mind but that would be the answer for me. I take it these messages are not a permanent feature, that they appeared and haven't been seen since?

This might be Messenger Spam. (More info here .)

You can try disabling the Messenger Service by following Microsoft's instructions:

Disabling Messenger Service in Windows XP

or using a program to do it for you like grc.com's 'Shoot the Messenger.
