This is an enclosure only, sold without a hard drive, so you must either reuse an old drive (handy if you're upgrading your laptop drive as I have just done) or buy a 2.5in laptop-style drive (a 40GB model costs around £40 from e.g. https://www.ebuyer.com and PC World occasionally have similar offers - meaning you'd have a self-powered 40GB portable back-up device for around £80).
The difference between this and a normal 2.5in drive enclosure is that this one can function independently of your computer.
The idea is that you use its 'on the go' feature to back up digital images from your camera while out and about, far from your PC.
It's much handier than lugging a laptop around and means your pics are still safe if your memory card should fail. This happened to a guy we were on safari with and he lost a whole day's pics. I think this gadget can also be used so that when your card is full the pics can be copied to the hard drive and then you can reuse the card.
You use your camera's USB lead to link it to this gadget and it's supposed to be a simple copying procedure, although mine hasn't arrived yet so I can't give a proper review. It looks like you can plug most USB devices into it so a card reader would probably work to, to save your camera battery being drained while transferring data.
It has its own rechargeable battery which is supposed to give two or three hours' use on standby or an hour's constant use tranferring data.
It's supposed to take around 9 mins to back up a full 1GB memory card.
If you don't have a spare hard drive and/or you can't be bothered with fitting one in the enclosure, you'd probably be better off buying a ready-made one.
Also, if you have an MP3 player of a suitable size you can get adaptors to transfer pics from your camera to it. I think these cost about £20 to £30.
I know this won't suit everyone. This one is just something I had been looking for for ages so I thought I'd post it in case other people were interested.
EDIT: I ordered one last night but it's now showing as available again in four days.
