Acorn newel cap

I am looking for a "replacement" acorn newel cap for the foot of the staircase in my 1911 home. Although I say replacement, the acorn is completely missing from the foot of the stair, although there is one on the landing. The newel base at the foot of the stair is very large, something like 150 mm square. What size acorn should I have? Anyone know where I can get one?

The only thing I can suggest is that you contact your local group of hobbyist woodturners and ask if anyone would be interested in making one for you.

Searching for “woodturners” in Google UK pages might give you a starting point.

Don't know if these are the correct size but we got all our stair parts from here http://www.richardburbidge.co.uk/homeowner/stair-balustrade/ they sell the same stuff in B & Q but it was much cheaper straight from the manufacturer.

It probably needs to be the same size as the one upstairs.

If you get one for the downstairs, think about fixing it in a way so that it can be removed. We had to saw the one of the bottom of our stairs in order to get furniture upstairs. Maybe that's why yours was removed?

Are you left with a flat newel without the acorn? You could always remove the acorn from the top of the stairs and stick with flat caps.

If you do replace the newel completely, can I have your flat newel cap? I've got an old house and need to replace the cap at the bottom of the stairs as its got a great big hole in it where the previous owner ran a (removed) light through it! I'm having difficulty sourcing a replacement.

The previous owner said thats why he removed the acorn, so he could put a lamp at the bottom of the stairs. Luckily, he had only taped the lamp to the newel cap! Looks like I need to find a kind woodworker to make me an acorn, cos the one at the top of the stairs is way bigger than what I've found online.
