Found cheque dated 2000. Can I still cash it?

Dear Readers,

I found a cheque from the Abbey National yesterday dated the 13/10/2000 as payment for an Insurance claim. I called the Abbey and they said it couldn't be cashed as their records don't go back that far. I have all the relevant references for it.
Are they right? Can I really not cash it?

One frustrated customer.

    it's 6 months.
you could try writing with all the details and asking them to re-issue. Try and have a good reason why you didn't cash it at the time, too.

Winnie is right, cheques are only valid for 6 months from date of issue.

Have you spoken to the company about having another one issued in it's place?
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Can you not contact the insurance company and asked them if they can reissue a new cheque

Seems odd not to cash a cheque in most insurance claims by there nature must be over a £100 as most ask for a contribution of at least £50 or more

Photocopy it and try paying it in: it might just go through anyway.

Otherwise, write to the appropriate department enclosing a copy of the cheque.

Thanks very much for the link to that useful information, Bean Counter:T

Still not much use to FishFace though as his/her cheque dates from 2000.
  • Hi carbootcrazy,

Just in case you are interested, here is another link to APACS showing the rules on times for the clearing of cheques, known as 2-4-6.

As a debt from more than 6 years ago, wouldn't it be statute barred by now?
