oops misread the post, I read it as the dealers charging £80-150 to remove the car.0

That may be because to you it's a garage bill, to the buyer it's a spare parts car or a few weekends in the garage before it returns to ebay0 -
Why on earth would the OP want to do that, when scrappies are offering £80 to £150?
Are they still offering this kind of money? Scrap metal values have fallen massively over the last 6 months.
My timing belt went on my car and some guy bid £150 on ebay to come and pick it up, so you can get a decent price for it on there. A recon engine though can cost £800-1000 fitted so maybe worth looking into if it's worth £2k.matched betting: £879.63

a secondhand engine sounds like your best bet
you should be able to get it done for 800-00-1000-00
it will need an oil change and a new timing belt to be on the safe side as well
what failed on the old engineremember it is nice to be important
but more important to be nice0 -
Thanks everyone for advice so far
Engine seized after cam belt went, apparently.
We phoned a couple more dealers today, one said he would give us £150 the lowest going down to £80, to take it away.
i think getting a new engine is going to be way out of our league, we just dont have that kind of money to be honest. Gutting as my OH will use my car for now and I will be walking everywhere!0 -
Secondhand engine is the best way to go, if you can find one of course.
You have to way up the costs, is it cheaper to repair it or buy a replacement? To repair it would cost far far more than if you found a secondhand engine - but it would still not be a cheap job. Try and find a good independent garage that will hopefully over quote - as you never really know the full cost until you get into it fully....
Or would it cost less to buy another car and scrap the mondeo? You have to weigh up all the pros and cons.
Its a good warning for everyone else tho to make sure you have the cam belt changed when you should - and in alot of cases, before they really are due - some are on stupid schedules like 10 years or 100k and very rarely make it to the mileage or years. And the manufacturers really don't want to know if it goes before those times. And don't just have the belt replaced, have the tensioners, pulleys and idlers changed at the same time - its a lot cheaper in the long run.Genie
