What type of work is he doing there as it makes a difference and is he taking expensive business equipment eg laptops.
Will he be coming home to the UK in the 9 months?0 -

If you are after a cheap policy City Bond offer 9 months on their young traveller policy (Must be under 45) which is £108.10 without baggage or £162.15 with baggage of £1500 but they will only pay a maximum of £300 in total for valuables which would include the lap top (Most insurers have a similar limit).
The above is a cheap policy (The cover is not bad). If you shop around you need to ensure they include cover for your son to do "Clerical / Sedentry Wok" as some policy exclude all types of work. Find out what cover they offer for the lap top (Some won't even cover it).
You should also be aware that if your son returns to the UK part way through the 9 months most companies automatically stop the policy. There are some that allow one trip back in case of a family emergency.
It may be worth considering taking cover without the baggage as these are much cheaper. You should take into account that if he does claim he will have to pay an excess (Contribution towards the claim) of between £30 and £100. Also most travel Insurers do not pay baggage claims on a "New for Old Basis" as you get on your home insurance so if he did claim for the lap top they are likely to give him considerably less than the £1500 he believes it is worth. (They are also likely to request proof of purchase / ownership eg receipt or credit card statement).
Also check what "Region" the travel insurer rates Russia as some companies will class it as Europe (The cheapest) and some will rate it as outside Europe (Slightly More Expensive)
You should do you own research as to which Insurer you select there are plenty of comparison sites (I believe MSE has one). But do read the small print as Travel Insurance is renowned for its small print.
I hope this helps0 -

Real problems finding a policy that will cover the laptop for full amount. It pays to challenge0

I did tell you this would be a problem, you will really struggle as travel policies have a low limit of around £300 for valuables which the lap top will come under. Most of the policies are not new for old so even if you claimed for the lap top you would probably get half of the £300 anyway.
It may be worth considering not taking cover on the lap top but becareful as Russia is not great for crime0
