car insurance query

My insurance company paid a third party claim without contacting me at all. I had reported an incident where another driver accused me of scraping some paint from his OSF bumper whilst I was reversing into a parking bay. I heard nothing until my renewal quote had been loaded to to a claim. I made no claim for damage as there was none. The other party was paid over £800 for repainting a small scrape which I denied doing. My insurance company said I had admitted the accident in a phone call which had been recorded without my knowledge. They then changed their minds and decided I had NOT admitted any liability .
\\\they never physically had the damage inspected, just accepted the report from third party.
Is it legal to pay a claim on a policy without informing the policyholder and giving them a chance to defend such a claim ???

Yes. It's precisely how insurance works.
  • all seems a bit underhand and open to abuse. To my mind my insurance company paid out over £800 due to a mistake by one of their staff-Who pays--we do

Insurance companies aren't charities, they're businesses. I don't know why you think anyone has made a mistake, and that's really not for here. I don't imagine that they wanted to pay out the claim but they've paid out, that's it, that's what insurance companies do.

I feel sorry for insurance companies.
