I pay £37 a month for electric by DD with Scottish Power, but our heating is oil fired. My last bill I owed them £8, for the winter months which I didn't think was too bad. I've now increased my DD to £43 pounds a month, but I'm hoping that will more than cover things.

We try and swich most things off at the mains now.

I think we use a lot & the electric DD is £64 (ish) & the gas a bit less. So yours is a lot.

I dont tend to have any heating on during the day to save costs.
    We cook on electric.
The property is a double glazed bungalow in cornwall with 2 bedrooms, 2 adults and a 9 month old. I know we do run the washing machine about once a day and the tumble dryer (although that has a delay timer and so is run over night on econmy 7).

Ive tried several things, at present we have not have the underfloor heating on at all, we have been a little obsesive over lighting and never have more than 1 light on in the eveinngs. The water is heated in the moring and night. The washing machine is run once a day, tumble dryer is run once at about 2am so on econmy 7. Yet we are still using about 40 units a day even then.

From what scottish power are saying we use about 60-70 day units a day. I find it hard to believe other people are paying this much and i dont see how i can reduce it (apart from not heating water or the house - which trust me with no heating on the last few days has been VERY cold even with the log burner in the lounge.)

I tried calling scottish power but have a LONG chat with them i gave in at the point they insisted that even the smallest under floor heating system uses 33 units and hour!! (Ive monitored ours and it uses 3kW per hour while heating but obviously turns off when the room is at temperature)

Firstly using Economy 7 will not make any difference to how many units you use per day. Secondly I note you have a young baby - are you doing your laundry on a hot wash? This will use 4KWH plus another 4KWH per hour to dry. Also you say you are not heating during the day. Do you mean you are only heating in the evening for a few hours or are you heating overnight as well? What is your preferred ambient temperature, are you trying to keep the house hot for the baby? How well insulated is your loft?

I dont know how other suppliers work out but Eon can charge you as if you dont have an Economy 7 meter withour changing it. Becuase with the latest prices you need to be using between 35 and 50% of your electric during the night rate to benefit from it.
  • £220 a month is some DD, 50-60 units a day is some usage!

Check your bill, I've seen it happen a few times where the supplier has added both reads together and charged a single rate.

Are you sure you have an Eco7 meter system, or something more exotic, again if the supplier is not aware that your system differs to Eco7 they could be charging over the odds.

How many meters are there? I ask as some systems look like Eco7, but work very differently, i.e. you may have your 24hr domestic supply on one meter, and your heating on another, there may be just one meter with two seperate recording elements. If you do there's no point in turning your appliances on at 2am, as they will be consuming the electricity on the same meter dial as they would through the day.

Check your bill, if you have 2 MPANS (13 digit number) and/or 2 Meter numbers then get in touch with your supplier and get something sorted out.
